How it works?

Everything you need to know about the booking, assessment, and follow-up process.

A general psychiatric assessment includes a psychiatric interview, relevant medical tests, psychometric tools, and sometimes collateral history (e.g. speaking to somebody who knows you well).

1. Initial consultation

The assessment process begins with an initial consultation to explore your symptoms and determine if further investigations are needed. We may speak to somebody who knows you well, but not always. Diagnostic impression, treatment options and follow-up will be discussed

2. Follow up consultations

The follow-up period is tailored to individual needs, but sessions typically last between 15 and 30 minutes. A combination of biological, psychological, and social treatments will be used to support your recovery.

An assessment for neurodevelopmental conditions, such as ADHD, includes a psychiatric interview, relevant medical tests, collateral history (e.g. interview with a childhood informant and school reports), and psychometric tools.

1. Initial appointment

The assessment process begins with an initial consultation to explore your experience and determine if further investigations are needed.

An initial consultation involves a clinical interview to explore your developmental history, current psychiatric symptoms, and medical background. This session helps determine whether further assessments are needed. Additional investigations may include blood tests and standardised rating scales. School reports are essential to provide insight into early functioning, and an observer interview will also be discussed to gain a fuller picture of your behaviour across settings.

2. Collateral consultation

As ADHD is a developmental condition, gathering information from others to describe how you were as a child is required. This includes school reports and a collateral interview with someone who knew you in childhood.

In line with the Australian Evidence-Based Clinical Guideline for ADHD v1.0 (Recommendation 2.1.2), observer reports are required to assess how your symptoms present across different settings and time periods. Accordingly, we will organise a collateral interview to talk to someone who knew you during your early development—such as a parent or somebody else. In addition, school reports provide evidence of functioning during childhood and adolescence. These reports help ensure a comprehensive and accurate assessment.

3. Feedback consultation

A feedback session follows to discuss diagnostic impressions, treatment recommendations, and next steps.

The feedback consultation provides an opportunity to discuss the results of the assessment, including diagnostic impressions and any identified strengths or challenges. A comprehensive biopsychosocial approach is used to guide treatment recommendations—this means considering biological, psychological, and social factors that may be influencing your symptoms and functioning.

An assessment for dementia includes a psychiatric interview, relevant medical tests (e.g., brain scans and blood tests), collateral history (e.g. speaking to somebody who knows you), psychometric tools (e.g., behavioural questionnaires), and cognitive testing.

1. Initial appointment

The assessment process begins with an initial consultation to explore your symptoms and we will generally also speak to somebody who knows you to understand your symptoms. Additional investigations (e.g., brain scans and blood tests) and questionnaires may be ordered.

2. Cognitive testing

Cognitive testing is used to assess your cognitive abilities. We typically use standardised assessments, such as the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) or the Addenbrooke’s Cognitive Examination III (ACE-III). These tests can be administered via telehealth.

3. Feedback consultation

A feedback session follows to discuss diagnostic impressions, treatment recommendations, and next steps.
